High on the Hog

Mark your calendars BBQ lovers, because one of the best weekends of the year is only a month away!

The 16th annual National Capital Barbecue Battle, presented by Safeway will be held on June 21st and 22nd on Pennsylvania Ave. NW between 9th and 14th St.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids, and include a great deal of free BBQ samples and live music on three different stages.

What will make this year's competition different, is that we'll see members of the Kansas City BBQ Society duke it out against the Memphis in May (I only wish North Carolina had reps here) to see who is the national BBQ king.

Just a clarification - you won't see KCBS vs. Memphis in May competition. For the first time at this event, the KCBS competition will take place on Saturday, using their set of rules and scoring (and their certified judges). The Memphis in May competition - which has always taken place here - will be judged on Sunday using their criteria and judges.

Each circuit will certify a winner under their own rules, and each winner will then qualify as a "State Champion" for the purpose of entry into the annual American Royal (KCBS) and Memphis in May (MiM) competitions.

Still a great time all around - though the organizers are having a really hard time getting back to those of us who are KCBS-certified about whether or not they will be able to have us participate as judges.
